Gender Reassignment (or sex change)

When there is a discrepancy between gender identity (if an individual feels male or female) and the physical characteristics of the body, we are speaking about gender identity disorder.

On a medical level, there is a very exhaustive protocol to follow to come to a true diagnosis of transsexualism. A team of psychologists and psychiatrists must verify that this clinical condition exists since, after endocrinological treatment, a complex, radical and irreversible surgery will be carried out.

In the gender reassignment process, a multidisciplinary team works together, comprising three fundamental specialities: psychiatry, endocrinology and plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.

Once the first phases of verification of gender identity disorder and of endocrinological and hormonal treatment have passed, the definitive phase of reconstructive surgery arrives.

This surgery's objective is to align the anatomical body with the individual's sexual identity.

Reconstructive surgery from male to female consists of:

  • The removal of the penis and the creation of a vagina, labia and clitoris
  • Breast augmentation
  • Aesthetic surgery in the body to give traits a more feminine appearance (tummy tuck, liposculpting, buttocks augmentation)
  • Aesthetic surgery in the face to give traits a more feminine appearance (rhinoplasty, cheek augmentation, chin augmentation, facelifts)

Reconstructive surgery from female to male is much more complex and includes:

  • The removal of the breasts
  • The removal of the uterus and ovaries
  • The creation of a penis
  • Aesthetic surgery in the body to give traits a more masculine appearance (tummy tuck, liposuction of the trochanteric area and the buttocks and thighs, liposculpting in the knees and calves to increase their volume)
  • Aesthetic surgery in the face to give traits a more masculine appearance (rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, facelifts, jaw augmentation)
